Art/Death Blog

June 21, 2006

After a recent project I did concerning my father's death, I had alot of conversations with alot of people about their experiences with the passing of relatives. These discussions became the most provocative part of the project for me. It seemed that because I was so open about the entire story of my father's death, people felt more open to talk about their own experiences and perspectives.

Death is a conversation that typically happens among people who are close, and I found for myself that sharing such an experience with large, unfamiliar audience gave me the license to really think about it as an event. There's something extremely freeing about being able to discuss something without emotion or fear of offensiveness as inhibitions. The anonymity of the Internet provides a great forum for whoever to talk about whatever. So I will look into how multi-user blogs work and will start that as my next project.

If one does a search for death blog, there will be many links that pop up. Many of them are very matter-of-fact, obituary style "this person dies on this day and they liked to do this and their career was this", such as The Blog of Death. These are good, but I'm interested in people how experience death. How someone deals with the loss, or if they see them die, what that was like. These are the things that need to be shared more often. These are the things that will help us understand this aspect of the world a bit more.

The death blog will be a place for those who've experienced it to escape the vacuum of isolation that often comes with it and realize death happens to all of us, and will be a place for those who are foreign to it to get some understanding of how people deal with death.
